We began in 2002, very much the brainchild of local literature enthusiast Philomena Dwyer and a creative writing group. Unfortunately, when Philomena became ill, she had to step down as the driving force behind the festival.
We now have a committee of nine local people, all bringing various skills to the organisation and running of the festival. In the past, we have welcomed a wide variety of authors and personalities to our festival.
Just a few examples are:
Poetry: Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion and Roger McGough
Fiction: Louis de Bernières, Germaine Greer, Barbara Erskine, Deborah Moggach and James Runcie and Rosie Thomas
Crime: Lynda La Plante, Mark Billingham, Sophie Hannah, Clare Mackintosh and David Thorne
Biography: Baroness Gillian Shephard, Peter Sissons, Prue Leith, Carol Drinkwater and Michael Holroyd
History: Ronald Blythe, Roy Hattersley, Anne de Courcy, Dan Cruikshank and Deborah Cadbury
