TUESDAY 21ST OCTOBER
JOHN WRIGHT
McGrigor Hall, 85 Fourth Avenue C013 9EB | 7:30pm | £13.50 | Bar
An evening of learning about wild food, nature and hidden treasures with one of Britain’s best-loved nature writers, uncovering the wonders of Britain’s woods, fields and seashores.

Mycologist and naturalist John Wright first shot to fame with his appearances on Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage television series, and still leads foraging sorties from River Cottage’s Devon HQ. He is a fellow of the Linnean Society, and is now finishing writing his tenth book.

He will enchant us with an evening of his insight and passion for wild harvests and the mystery and magic of our countryside, the result of decades of experience. Whether it’s the wild species you can take home and eat after a walk down a lane or a trip to the beach, from dandelions in spring to sloe berries in autumn, via wild garlic, samphire, chanterelles and even grasshoppers; what species can be found and where, and how to identify, store, use and cook them; or the stories behind the Latin names, John is your companionable – and frequently hilarious – guide.

John’s books are for anyone interested in the wild around us, whether you want to explore the great outdoors in person or are happiest foraging from your armchair. Besides River Cottage Handbooks to Mushrooms, Booze and the Edible Seashore, they include A Natural History of the Hedgerow, The Forager’s Calendar, A Spotter’s Guide to the Countryside, The Observant Walker and The Naming of the Shrew.
